ACLU details deputy brutality in L.A. jails

>>> texas governor rick perry jockeying with mitt romney for the presidential race . rick perry has never lost an election in his 26 years in elected office. not one. and that is not because he hasn't had hard fights. not because he hasn't had serious well-funded high-profile big-name challengers. just last year, for example, he was challenged in his re-election bid for texas governor by texas ' long serving popular republican senator kay bailey hutchison . and there were two things that i found surprising that the hutchison for governor campaign tried to use against rick perry . the first was the more or less famous rick perry gay hidden text in the campaign website . remember this story? a reporter for the austin american statesman found in the summer of 2009 the kay bailey hutchison campaign website included a huge long list of terms that seemed designs to make her website pop on search engines . sometimes when you google something and click on one of the search results but the website that comes up doesn't actually contain the terms that you searched for? that sometimes happens because websites have this hidden text that you don't see as a user but that hidden text does get read and indexed by search engines . people do it anyway. in the case of the kay bailey hutchison campaign website , when she was running for texas governor against rick perry , among the hidden text she had hidden on her website was the phrase, rick perry gay. she actually had rick perry gay up on the hidden text of her website twice. when asked by the "austin american-statesman" about this the hutchison campaign said they had not done it on purpose, they said it was a computer generated result of the fact a lot of people were searching the phrase rick perry gay. even in saying they would make sure that hidden text was going to be taken down right away, the campaign made sure to get this quote into the newspaper. listen to this. "we did not know these offensive word associations were being searched for by hundreds of thousands of texans every day nor do we condone the computer generated existence on our website . they will be removed promptly." in other words, we're not saying rick perry is gay, we would never say that. we find the whole idea offense i. apparently a lot of people want to know. it is not unheard of for candidates to launch whisper campaigns and insinuate their opponents are gay. it happened in 1994 when george w. bush ran successfully against ann richards in texas for governor. happened again in the republican senate primary last year in delaware when christine o'donnell weirdly tried to insinuate over and over again congressman mike castle was gay. insinuations turns up in a gubernatorial campaign is not an unprecedented thing in american politics . though it is not unprecedented i think it was still a surprising gambit from the kay bailey hutchison campaign. the other surprising thing she tried to use against rick perry is the case of cameron todd willingh willingham , executed by the state of texas in 2004 despite a lot of rather troubling flaws and the evidence used to convict him. despite until the very end he said he was innocent of the crimes for which he was convicted. kay bailey hutchison is a supporter of the death penalty . she raised in her campaign against rick perry , though, the fact perry had intervened in a panel looking into the evidence against cameron todd willingham . hutchison in messing with that panel rick perry both made a mistake and was, quote, trying to ramrod a covering up. this was not in the general election . this is not rick perry running against a democrat or running against somebody who is anti- death penalty . this was a race of two vehemently pro- death penalty republican candidates in texas . which made it a surprising choice for the kay bailey hutchison campaign that they would go after him on the case of cameron todd willingham and whether or not he should have been executed. neither of those surprising choices worked out for kay bailey hutchison . in the primary she lost to rick perry by 20 points and neither of those attacks by her seem to have carried over into rick per perry 's next campaign which is the one he's in now trying to win the republican presidential nomination . the candidates he's up against in this race are throwing a million things at rick perry in terms of his record, but day are neither explicitly nor implicitly accusing him of being gay and the cameron todd willingham case, in that case, frankly rick perry is all but wearing that one like a badge of honor.

>> governor perry , a question about texas . your state has executed 234 death row inmates, more than any other governor in modern times . have you -- [ applause ] have you struggled to sleep at night with the idea that any one of those might have been innocent?

>> no, sir, i've never struggled with that at all. the state of texas has a very thoughtful, a very clear process in place of which when someone commits the most heinous of crimes against our citizens, they get a fair hearing, they go through an appellate process, they go up to the supreme court of the united states if that's required. but in the state of texas , if you come into our state and you kill one of our children, you kill a police officer , you're involved with another crime and you kill one of our citizens, you will face the ultimate justice in the state of texas . and that is you will be executed.

>> not only is governor perry not losing sleep over executing prisoners, but he rather expertly turns even a question about it around into an opportunity to get the crowd to root for him. to root for him essentially in unison against these kinds of monsters who are coming into texas and doing monstrous things to find themselves on death row . it's the same way governor perry handled it during the kay bailey hutchison race when she brought up the willingham race and accused him of the covering up, his campaign responded like this. it said, if you "oppose the death penalty for someone who murdered his three children, beat his wife while she was pregnant with twins in an effort to force an abortion, repeatedly changed his story, who confessed and whose last words were an obscenity laced tirade aimed at his ex-wife and conviction upheld nine times by federal courts , then they should just say so." so the idea was, you know, what are you, on his side? this monster ? you're worried about this guy's execution? that's why you're on this monster 's side. it's hard for anybody to get political attraction of alleged bad treatment of allegedly bad guys . when politicians get involved in crime and justice issues, the policy changes in one direction, it almost always becomes more conservative than it was before the politicians got involved. the political defense against claims that you are badly treating criminals or suspects or protesters or prisoners has always been to point at those people and say, you're taking these guys' side? these are the bad guys . you're going to take their side? so these debates always go in the same direction and it has always been true and may always be true that nobody has ever lost a race for governor in texas or a republican primary because they mistreated a bad guy . that has never been used successfully against somebody in american politics . at least it very rarely is. and that will be comforting to the governors of florida and georgia, frankly. today in florida , yet another delay in an execution. there have been seven this month nationwide. florida kills its prisoners with a lethal drug cocktail that includes a new drug something called pentobarbotol. makers stopped making it so it could not be used to kill prids prisoners. the danish company doesn't want their drug to be used to kill people. they've said it over and over and over again. the company announced this summer it would no longer sell pentobarbital to prisons in death penalty states. florida has a stock pile . hours before florida carried out the execution of manuel vall, it was delayed pending a review from the supreme court of request for a stay in part because the man's lawyer said the new death penalty drug would cause him substantial harm. the supreme court decided not to block the execution and the state of florida went ahead with it. valle was declared dead at 7:14 p.m . eastern. it was announced today a memorial service would be held friday and funeral saturday in savannah, georgia, for troy davis , who was executed by the state of georgia last week despite the fact the seven of the nine witnesses against him recanted their testimony and three jurors who voted to convict him now say they have significant doubt in the verdict. today also the largest jail in the world which naturally is in america also ended up in the news. did you ever see the movie "the hangover"? i have not seen it. it's popular among the rachel maddow staff. i asked today if people had favorite clips and it was a giant fight, people fighting over what we should show from "the hangover."

>> i looked everywhere. nobody's seen doug.

>> i don't think i've ever been this hung over .

>> what's on your arm?

>> you were in the hospital last night.

>> the only important thing now is we find doug.

>> one of the executive producers of that very popular movie, one of the executive producers of "the hangover" is a guy named scott budnick . in addition to being a hollywood producer, he does something very cool. he volunteers teaching writing to people in jail in l.a. he's done it for years. about five years ago he actually won los angeles volunteer of the year award in the district in l.a. in which he lives because he does this work. today in los angeles , mr. volunteer of the year, the man who was the producer of "the hangover" had a sworn legal declaration released by the aclu in which he describes the multiple times he was in los angeles jails and saw sheriffs deputies beating people up. people who were imprisoned there. people who were not fighting, not resisting, not provoking anything. not doing anything to deserve getting beaten up. but getting beaten up and some cases getting beaten up badly. mr. budnick says things like, "i saw the deputy grab the inmate's head and smash his head into the wall hard. it was so hard i could hear an audible crack when the deputy slammed his head against the wall. at no point did i see the inmate do anything to any of the other prisoners or deputy. the inmate was very respectful to the deputy. after i saw this, i quickly went back inside the courtroom." the biggest jail in the world, the biggest jail in the country, in the world is now in trouble. the fbi has been investigating the l.a. county jail system in secret for months now. part of the reason the jail found out that the fbi was investigating them in secret is that people in the jail, people who work in the jail, found that a prisoner inside the jail had a cell phone . they're not supposed to have cell phones . it turns out the fbi had a bribe to the fbi 's informant inside the jail so the informant could call out to the fbi and tell them what he was seeing for their investigation. ktla has also done an exclusive report earlier this year on a gang in that prison. not a gang of prisoners, but a gang among the jail guards. a gang among the prison sheriff deputies. that gang stands accused of among other things assaulting this former prisoner, a man named evans tutt. he was kicked repeatedly by deputies despite complying with his orders.

>> at least three deputies involved in tutt's case are part of the group who call themselves the 3,000 boys named after the third or 3,000th floor of men's central jail where they're assigned. the group works hard and they play hard. as a symbol, they flash gang-like hand signs. 3 fingers for 3,000. they sport similar tattoos. one even has their number inked on their neck.

>> there's a distinct line drawn between ink and nonink --

>> the ink that this current active l.a. county sheriffs deputy is talking about are the tattoos worn by groups of deputies as symbols of their allegiance to deputy affiliated gangs within the department.

>> they call them subgroups. secret societies .

>> do you think these groups breed propensity for violence?

>> you know, they brag about it. they brag about shootings.

>> the sheriff in charge of the los angeles county system acknowledges the groups exist within his department but denies they're responsible for any sort of violence. regardless because of what they describe as hundreds of reports of unprovoked assaults and beatings, specifically on the 3,000 floor of the jail you heard about, the aclu of southern california is asking the attorney general of the united states and the federal justice department to get involved here. they're asking the fbi -- excuse me, they're asking the justice department to bring a criminal investigation into how the largest jail in the country is being run. they're also asking for the sheriff who is in charge of the facility to resign. his name is lee baca . whether or not sheriff baca does resign, whether or not the justice department does turn this into a criminal investigation , if past is any prologue, no one else other than the sheriff is likely to win or lose an election because of this issue. this is politics but it is politics of a different kind. this is values politics. about who we are as a country. it is a specific kind of political work to fix problems like this. to get attention to problems with the way we are doing the death penalty these days, for example. and sometimes to get attention to the death penalty as a problem, itself. it is political work to raise enough of a ruckus to convince the catholic chaplins and the people like a hollywood producer visiting as a writing tutor , to convince people like that to speak out against the jail they're working in even though they are definitely not there to make waves. because the ruckus has to be loud enough to get people to notice and care that the biggest jail in the world probably ought to be torn down. even the sheriff admit s that. to get people to notice and care that the people for whom they probably don't have too much sympathy, still should not be beaten with impunity. it is not about whether or not you like the person who the guy in the uniform is beating up, but this is about the fact that the guy in the uniform is us. that that is in our name. this is a democracy. government of by and for the people. what sheriffs deputies did to this visitor, a visitor to the l.a. county jail, that's us. that's us. killing cameron todd willingham , that's us. no one really loses and election over stuff like this. it's true. especially on the right. there really is no compassionate conservative voting bloc holding politicians accountable on issues like this. kay bailey hutchison tried it against rick perry and lost to him by 20. these political fights do not decide elections. these political fights, every bit as much as who we elect in the next election will write what history says about who we are

Syrian regime supporters pelt US envoy with eggs

Pro-Syrian regime protesters hold Syrian flags and portraits of Syrian President Bashar Assad, as they protest to show their support for the Addounia pro-regime TV channel, on the airport highway near Damascus, Syria, Monday Sept. 26, 2011. The channel was hit by new EU sanctions allegedly for instigating violence in Syria. (AP) ? Supporters of President Bashar Assad pelted the U.S. ambassador to Syria with eggs and tomatoes Thursday as he entered an office for a meeting with a leading opposition figure and then tried to storm the building in the capital Damascus, the opposition activist said.

Ambassador Robert Ford, an outspoken critic of Assad's crackdown on the 6-month-old anti-government uprising, was trapped in the office for about three hours until Syria security forces showed up and escorted him out.

Ford came under attack as he arrived for a meeting with Hassan Abdul-Azim, who heads the outlawed Arab Socialist Democratic Union party.

"Now that security forces are here, I believe his life is not in danger," Abdul-Azim told The Associated Press.

Ford has angered the Syrian regime in past months by visiting a couple of the protest centers outside of Damascus in a show of solidarity with the anti-government uprising. The latest incident could further raise tensions between Washington and Damascus, which has accused the United States of helping incite violence in Syria. In August, President Barack Obama demanded Assad resign, saying he had lost his legitimacy as a ruler.

Abdul-Azim said Ford was inside his office when the Assad supporters tried to force their way in, breaking some door locks. Office staff prevented them from rushing in, but the ambassador was trapped inside for about three hours with some 100 hostile pro-government protesters outside.

Abdul-Azim said Syrian security arrived about an hour after the attack began.

The U.S. Embassy had no immediate comment on the confrontation.

The attack on Ford came five days after government supporters threw eggs and stones at France's ambassador as he left a meeting in Damascus with a Greek Orthodox patriarch. Ambassador Eric Chevallier was unharmed.

Tension between the West and Syria ? Iran's closest Arab ally ? have been rising for months.

Washington and the European Union have imposed sanctions on some Syrian officials, including Assad, because of Assad's crackdown that has left some 2,700 people, according to the United Nations.

A trip in July by the U.S. and French ambassadors to the central city of Hama to express support for protesters drew swift condemnation from the Syrian government, which said the unauthorized visits were proof that Washington was inciting violence in the Arab nation. Authorities then warned both ambassadors not to travel outside the capital without permission.

A month later, the Obama administration brushed off a complaint by Syrian authorities that Ford violated their travel rules by leaving Damascus without permission. The Syrian foreign ministry registered concern over Ford's trip in August from Damascus to the southern village of Jassem, where he met opposition activists.

Last month, Ford and several other ambassadors expressed their condolences to the family of a rights advocate who was killed.

The U.S. has maintained diplomatic relations with Syria even while protesting Assad's efforts to crush the uprising.

Newly identified DNA repair defect linked to increased risk of leukemia relapse

Monday, September 26, 2011

A newly identified defect in a DNA repair system might leave some young leukemia patients less likely to benefit from a key chemotherapy drug, possibly putting them at greater risk of relapse. The problem was identified in a study led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientists.

The study's findings offer a potential new marker to help identify acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients who are at higher risk of having their cancer return and thus are candidates for more tailored therapies. The research was published in the September 25 online edition of the scientific journal Nature Medicine.

The work focused on a protein named MSH2, which is involved in DNA repair. DNA is the molecule that carries instructions for building and sustaining life. Cell division requires DNA synthesis. The DNA repair system helps correct errors in DNA production. The DNA repair proteins are also involved in how some chemotherapy agents kill leukemia cells.

In this study, investigators discovered a new mechanism responsible for low MSH2 levels in about 11 percent of pediatric ALL and in several adult cancers. Researchers also found low MSH2 levels were associated with leukemia resistance to the thiopurine medications, including mercaptopurine, a drug all children with ALL receive.

"If confirmed, this work suggests a patient's MSH2 status might someday be used to guide treatment," said Barthelemy Diouf, Ph.D., the first author. He is a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of William Evans, Pharm.D., the paper's senior author. Evans is chief executive officer and director of St. Jude.

In the U.S., ALL is diagnosed in about 3,000 children annually, making it the nation's most common childhood cancer. It is also one of modern medicine's success stories. At St. Jude, 90 percent of young ALL patients are now cured. This study reflects ongoing efforts to understand why treatment sometimes fails.

The research built on earlier work from the laboratory of Evans and others that linked a deficit of MSH2 with an increased risk of certain cancers and resistance to mercaptopurine, a drug that is the backbone of leukemia treatment.

In this study, scientists found that 11 percent of 90 newly diagnosed pediatric ALL patients had low or undetectable levels of the MSH2 protein.

Ten years after an ALL diagnosis, children with low MSH2 protein levels were less likely to be alive and four times more likely to have suffered relapses. The comparison included 97 patients treated in a St. Jude study called Total XV, which ended in 2007. Sixteen patients had leukemia with low MSH2 levels. The analysis took other factors into account, including a patient's age and early treatment response, which are associated with high-risk ALL. The results suggest MSH2 protein levels might help identify a new group of high-risk patients.

Further work revealed no evidence of problems in the MSH2 gene itself, so scientists expanded their search for why some patients had low MSH2 levels in their leukemia cells. Researchers looked for changes in the makeup of eight genes known or suspected of playing a role in the breakdown of MSH2. To do that, they screened DNA from 69 of the 90 newly diagnosed ALL patients at nearly 1 million spots in the genome.

The research showed each patient was missing at least one of the four genes that regulate MSH2 degradation. "MSH2 was still made, but the system to protect it from destruction had been impaired or eliminated, leading to more rapid breakdown of MSH2 and a crippled system for fixing DNA," Evans said. The missing genes were FRAP1, HERC1, PRKCZ and PIK3C2B.

A check of leukemia cells from another group of St. Jude ALL patients found that about 12 percent, or 21 of the 170 children, were missing at least one of the same genes. A search of public databases found one or more of the same genes deleted in 13.5 percent of sporadic colorectal cancer patients and 16 percent of adults with ALL.

Evans noted that low MSH2 levels did not increase resistance to other drugs used to treat ALL. "In the future, we may want to intensify use of other therapies," he said.

A Curative Training Day | Alli Rainey Climbing

Ah, BP1, you mind-warping demon! How dare you taunt me with the idea that I?might improve my strength and power enough to send you this season, only to toy with my emotions, day in and day out, as the warm-enough weather fades into a memory and my days of climbing here for the season dwindle?alas, it would be so much easier to take this consistent paddling if I hadn?t been pushing my one-hanging sticking point up for the last two months, until it?s finally at the last hard move with pretty much no time left for another breakthrough. This would be so very much easier to take if I wasn?t so close to sending now?if I was back at a two-hang or at the first one-hanging spot, low on the route.

I feel like a UFC fighter who?s involved in some unceasing loop, where I have to do battle with the same opponent who?s a better fighter than I am every other day. I work and strive and push my weaknesses, knowing exactly what?s holding me back, and then I step into the ring once more, only to discover that I?m still not quite able to beat my greatest foe (to date). But I also realize that this is what makes rock climbing the way I do it ? as a sport climber who?s all about pushing personal performance on real rock climbs ? so much easier in a way than a UFC fighter gets it. After all, they train and train and train and train for months and months to do battle one time ? and if they step into the ring and get knocked out in 10 seconds, that?s what all that training leads up to. Harsh.

And they don?t have the luxury like I did yesterday, when I observed during my warm-up burn that I just didn?t feel quite right; I felt not quite recovered from the other days of climbing, like the big work sessions on the upper crux had left my biceps and triceps feeling less powerful than usual ? I pretty much knew I didn?t have a chance before I even tried for real yesterday. How much would that suck, to wake up on the day of your big fight, your one chance, and just feel sort of off and not really totally at your peak? When that happens to me, I can do what I did yesterday ? give it a couple full-efforts burns with no expectations, knowing I?m not feeling great, and then just head home to train to dissipate some of the frustration I feel.

That?s the beauty of my relationship with sport climbing though. I get to walk away pretty much whenever I want, and I?ve found this summer even more than ever before, that when I have a down day on the rock or even a down week, if I come home and train on Friday, I usually feel pretty uplifted and empowered by the experience. Yesterday was no exception. I?m lucky enough to be able to do this this year, even while working a route that pushes my strength and power ? to put in effective apr?s-climbing training sessions that help rather than hinder my progress. I love having enough of a base to do this without risking injury or overtraining; I?ve developed much better body sense of knowing when to go and when to stop as far as training goes, too.

So yesterday, I improved wildly on the eccentric lowers ? I can stop my motion and hang isometrically through the first half of the lower now, and the second half is much slower. Super cool to see this progress! I did some triceps lifting, too; as always my tri?s were trashed from BP1; that?s the weakness that?s holding me back from the send, for sure. Too many moves requiring me to push holds way past the pulling point, and it just drains their power. I also did a quick ab-maintenance hit.

Just for the heck of it, I decided to see where my fingers are after this summer, too. I haven?t been training fingers and forearms all summer, because they?re my greatest strength. I don?t fall from my hands opening up, ever ? never fall because of a forearm pump. I always fall because I?m not strong enough to pull the next move. Seriously ? always. So I haven?t trained my fingers because that would be training my strength, and when I?m training after climbing, I?ve wanted to keep it brief. But yesterday, curiosity got the best of me ? and wow, was that ever fun and cool to check out. My fingers are way stronger in terms of both pure strength as well as in terms of power endurance, thanks to BP1.

I did five sets of strength reps, and then after doing all the other training, did three, 10-minute power-endurance sets. It was so fun! Training strengths is always fun, I think, because it makes you feel super strong, but seeing gains in my strengths just from trying this route 1 million times was ultra-cool. Coupled with the gains in my weaker areas that I know I?ve gotten from both the route and the route-driven training, I simply can?t be upset about the outcome of this summer, even if I have to walk away sans send and come back next season even stronger to tear it to pieces. As a bonus, too, it seems like the power-endurance sets left me feeling better and more recovered from the entire training sesh than I usually am; makes sense, as they were probably a good cool-down for my muscles.

I followed this with a full-body stretching and a steak dinner; once a week I eat red meat, and it?s always after this training. Today, I feel excited about going to the Red River Gorge more than I have been, and ready to just leave this whole BP1 thing until spring, when I?ll hopefully step into the ring for my final bout with this opponent and discover that I am now the superior fighter, at long last.

If you're a fan of HBO's Boardwalk Empire, you'll probably want to tune in to PBS' new Prohibition-era doc -- on your iOS device. That's right, the federally-funded public network's hip to our digital distributing times, and is giving an early access viewing window to users of its PBS app across Apple's iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. While the doc's two subsequent episodes will also stream live day and date on PBS' video hub, your mobile apps won't get the visual goods until the day after air. Health and Fitness ? How to Find the Best Foot Massager for Your ...

Chronic foot soreness plagues millions of individuals throughout the world, so it is no wonder that there are foot massage contraptions of every conceivable shape and size out on the market today. With so many devices to choose from, it is hard to know how to choose the right massager for you. In this article, I will help you find the best foot massager for your money.

Pricey Hi-Tech Massage Machines

There are many high-tech foot and leg massagers out there, but with the high technology comes a high price tag. One such massager is the Ottoman Human Touch machine. This contraption looks kind of like, as the name suggests, an ottoman. You stick your feet into the slots, and a remote controlled roller massages the bottom of your feet.

This and similar massagers will doubtlessly give you a soothing massage, but the question you?ll need to ask yourself is whether you really want or actually need to spend $300 and upwards in order to massage your feet?

Mid-priced Massage Tools

If you are not quite ready to splurge on the priciest foot gadget money can buy, consider instead a mid-priced foot therapy tool. The Multi Mode Warming Luxury Tapping Foot Massager is one such device. Priced at around $50, this device not only gives your feet a nice patting and vibrating massage, it also has a warming function to heat the soles of your feet.

This and similar devices are good alternatives if you aren?t crazy about paying top dollar, and can provide a pleasant massage. One drawback to be aware of is that they are mechanical machines, and may be subject to breakage, and so consider the cost of repair and replacement when making your choice.

Low-tech, Low-Cost Effective Foot Massagers

You may be surprised that some of the most inexpensive, low-tech foot therapy devices can actually give you the best foot massage without breaking the bank. My favorite such foot device, and in my opinion the best foot massager for your money, is the traditional Japanese bamboo foot massager.

This simple massage tool, which has been used as the go-to foot massage tool in Japan for centuries, is simply a half-cut of bamboo that is naturally arched in such a way that it gives the bottoms of your feet a soothing, stimulating and surprisingly effective massage, just by stepping on it.

In contrast to the pricier models described above, this type of low-tech massage tool can be had for under $20, and since it is made of hard, natural bamboo and has no moving parts, it is durable and you can expect it to last a lifetime. It is also small, lightweight, portable, and very simple to use, so you?re more likely to keep using it instead of stashing it away unused in your garage, closet or attic.

As you can see, there are many good massage tools out on the market for every budget. So which is the?best foot massager?for your money?

PFT: Romo to play Monday?? |? 'Could barely breathe'

Bill BelichickAP

The second part of NFL Films? excellent documentary on Bill Belichick premieres tonight at 9 on NFL Network, and it?s another good look inside the Patriots? head coach as he led his team through the 2009 season.

I?ve already gone into a lot of detail about the first installment, but one of the strengths of Part Two of Bill Belichick: A Football Life is that it doesn?t just paint him as a genius coach who makes all the right moves. Two of the key moments in Part Two are decisions that Belichick, in hindsight, would like to have back.

First, there?s Belichick?s infamous decision to go for it on fourth-and-2 from the Patriots? own 28-yard line late in a game against the Colts. The Patriots? offense was stopped just short of the first down, the Colts took advantage of their great field position and scored the game-winning touchdown, and Belichick was pilloried for that call. But Belichick didn?t seem particularly bothered by any of the criticism, saying privately more or less what he said publicly: He thought going for it on fourth down was better than punting, and so he made the call he thought was best at the time.

Belichick appeared to feel more regret about another decision he made that season: Playing Wes Welker, who led the league with 123 catches that season, in an essentially meaningless Week 17 game at Houston. Welker suffered a torn ACL in that game and the Patriots lost in the first round of the playoffs without him.

The most fascinating part of the documentary is that NFL Films recorded Belichick in meetings during the week of the Texans game discussing which players he?d hold out to keep them healthy for the playoffs. During the week, Belichick seemed to be leaning toward keeping Welker inactive because he was worried about an injury.

?Maybe Welker, too,? Belichick said when listing players who would be inactive for the Texans game. ?I don?t know how smart it?d be to put him in there to get lit up another eight or 10 times like he usually does.?

Later, Belichick is shown in another meeting suggesting that Welker and Randy Moss would both play but get only limited action.

?Even if Welker?s healthy, I think there?s a point in this game where you can just back off,? Belichick said, before adding of Moss and Welker, ?Those are two guys we can?t really afford to lose.?

Sure enough, the Patriots did lose Welker, and Belichick is shown in his office afterward looking devastated about it. This great look at a great coach also includes the coach?s mistakes.

breast cancer signs | Breast Cancer Informed

Every day men and women consult with their doctors with regard to their health problems. When people schedule an appointment with their physicians they are planning to go to the doctor?s office because they hope that they will be healed from what ails them.

However, even physicians make mistakes. Unfortunately, some of these mistakes can result in life-changing, permanent, or even fatal injuries.

The Institute of Medicine conservatively estimates that medical errors are the 8th leading cause of death in the United States. Medical errors could be prevented. In addition to lives that have been changed or lost, medical errors cost the country approximately billion per year.

One area that affects thousands of women and the ones they love every day is breast cancer. When a health care provider fails to properly diagnose a patient who has breast cancer the results can be devastating.

A possible reason that the failure to properly diagnose ? or to misdiagnose ? breast cancer is so common is that the medical community for the most part has the preconceived notion that the only older women are at risk and that these women also have a family history of breast cancer.

The Physicians Insurers Association of America did a study and found that the three main reasons that doctors misdiagnose breast cancer are:

1. Doctors do not take women seriously when these women describe the symptoms of breast cancer.

2. Even if the patient says that she has felt a lump many doctors still heavily rely on negative mammogram results.

3. Physicians place too much emphasis on a woman?s age as a factor for predicting breast cancer.

What is the Best Way to Detect Breast Cancer?

The key to early detection of breast cancer is to regularly test for it. If you can spot the signs early you will greatly improve your chances for a total recovery.

The two best ways to test for breast cancer are by having regular mammograms and by doing a thorough self-exam each and every month.

To put things into perspective about how important early detection is, let?s take a look at the 5-year survival rate for people with breast cancer who received the appropriate treatments. The best indicator of the prognosis is based on the clinical stage of breast cancer.

- Stage 0 ? 100%

- Stage 1 ? 100%

- Stage II ? 86%

- Stage III ? 57%

- Stage IV ? 20%

If cancer is not diagnosed in time it can greatly reduce the chance of recovery.

When you visit your doctor keep in mind that in terms of cost and frequency the delay in the diagnosis of breast cancer is one of the leading causes of malpractice claims in the United States.

If you are a victim of malpractice you may be entitled to compensation for the cost of health and personal care, lost income, and other damages.

Brand Strategy Consulting To Understanding Business Branding ...

Brand Strategy Consulting To Understanding Business Branding

Brand strategy consulting

Brand strategy consulting

The label may be at different levels. You can have your company?s corporate branding strategy from brand strategy consulting, which covers all services under one roof. If a strategic decision, they may feel to the service group or a specific service line. They all have advantages and disadvantages of brand strategy and the decision should be guided by long-term strategy for the company.

Let us look at some of the pros and cons that go along with the standard corporate brand consultancy. At the hearing, there are many companies that claim they can increase corporate profits at any time without any basis for their claims. Again, there are companies who have proven credentials. Now the hard choice to make in relation to a company brings value. If your company is a consulting firm recognized brand to be answering questions about the credibility and legitimacy. If you choose to brand the company has proposed to limit its service to airlines that can provide additional value to customers. McKinsey is known for strategic advice. If you can offer a wide range of brand strategy consulting services under one roof and do it well, corporate brand strategy work for your business.

Service label group can work well if your business is vast and offers a variety of services. Marks set of services less than one brand more visible is a special group of services, when they say that they refer to the Chevrolet brand of General Motors. Chevrolet cars are different from his umbrella, and it is this group feel. The company can create brand specific group of service, so that the services covered by the brand may have its own identity. The drawback of a service brand that the group may mask other important services for your business. People may begin to associate your brand group. You should be careful if you are planning Fire Service Group.

Counseling may be offered under the brands of the group. Walkman, Sony has created a niche product, which has become so famous that the name has become synonymous with any other similar product on the market. When people speak of today, the Walkman does not really associate with the Sony. This may be one of the best examples of a type of group. Today?s businesses use trademarks only as much effort as possible with a focus on service, while others can be ignored. If a company wants to concentrate more on online business, you can do group work. Brand strategy consulting is a strategic decision to be taken in the top ranks of corporate structure. Fire advice depends on the size of your business and services to offer.

Norway killer tells court keeping him in isolation is "torture" (Reuters)

OSLO (Reuters) ? Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik complained at a court hearing on Monday that keeping him in solitary confinement in prison was a form of "torture" after a judge ordered that he remains in isolation for another four weeks.

Breivik, who has admitted killing 77 people on July 22, has been kept in isolation for two months.

Under Norwegian law, solitary confinement can only be imposed for four weeks at a time, but the prosecution is free ask for an extension when the term runs out.

Eight of Breivik's victims were killed in a bombing in Oslo that destroyed the Norwegian government's headquarters and 69 were gunned down on a nearby island.

Judge Anne Margrethe Lund said the isolation was necessary to hinder Breivik from communicating with potential accomplices, whose existence the police need to investigate further.

Lund said she had stopped Breivik from speaking at length at the hearing as his topic was deemed irrelevant.

"He wanted to communicate something to the court, but that wasn't relevant to the decision the court was to make today, so therefore he was not allowed to explain further regarding that issue," Lund told a news conference.

The judge said Breivik had repeated a previous statement that he experienced his isolation as a "form of torture."

Breivik's lawyer Geir Lippestad told reporters Breivik asked to read a statement at the closed-door hearing and had shown no signs of regret for his deeds.

"He has not expressed any remorse," he said. "He appeared calm and restrained as he had been earlier."

"He said a few words about how he saw custody and isolation. He said it is tough to be in isolation," Lippestad said.

Legal experts expect Breivik to remain in prison until trial, possibly in the first half of 2012, although he will not necessarily stay in solitary confinement that long.

Police were guarding the courthouse with machine guns and fingers on the trigger, highlighting the tension surrounding the proceedings in a country where armed police is a rare sight.

USA: Boston's elderly homeless sicker than others

ScienceDaily (Sep. 13, 2011) ? A striking portrait of the health of Boston's elderly homeless population is emerging from a new study by the Institute for Aging Research of Hebrew SeniorLife, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The study finds that homeless seniors in Boston experience higher rates of geriatric syndromes, including functional decline, falls, frailty and depression, than seniors in the general population and that many of these conditions may be easily treated if detected.

"Our study shows that older homeless adults in Boston have higher rates of geriatric syndromes compared to the general population," says lead author Rebecca T. Brown, M.D., a research fellow at the Institute for Aging Research at the time the study was conducted. "Many of these syndromes are treatable if addressed proactively."

Researchers from the Institute for Aging Research, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program collaborated on the study, which was funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

Published online in the Journal of Geriatric Internal Medicine, the study found that geriatric conditions were common in homeless adults ages 50 to 69, including problems with performing daily activities, walking, vision and hearing, as well as falls, frailty, depression and urinary incontinence. The research team examined data from interviews and physical examinations of 247 homeless adults over a six-month period at eight Boston homeless shelters and compared the information with three large population-based study cohorts.

Thirty percent of the homeless seniors reported difficulty performing at least one activity of daily living, such as bathing and dressing, and more than half said they fell in the prior year. Nearly 40 percent experienced major depression, and one-quarter suffered from cognitive decline, primarily impaired executive function (decision-making, planning and judgment).

According to previous studies, the average age of the homeless population in the United States is increasing. Nearly one-third of homeless adults in the U.S. today are over age 50, compared to 11 percent in the 1990s. In Boston, more than 7,000 men, women and children are homeless, according to the city's latest homeless census. Eighteen percent of homeless men in Boston and 15 percent of homeless women are older than 55. Despite this trend, little is known about geriatric syndromes among the growing elderly homeless population. The Institute for Aging Research study is the first to rigorously characterize the presence of geriatric syndromes in older homeless adults.

"Clinicians who care for homeless adults should screen them for age-related conditions earlier than patients who have not experienced homelessness," says senior author Susan L. Mitchell, M.D., M.P.H., a senior scientist at the Institute for Aging Research. "This study suggests that homeless adults aged 50 and older have high rates of common geriatric conditions that are usually found in patients 65 and older."

Dr. Brown says that many of these conditions are easily treated if they are detected. Addressing these issues proactively, she adds, may reduce adverse outcomes and acute hospitalizations. She also says that screening and standard treatment for geriatric syndromes is warranted for homeless adults over the age of 50 who have access to health care, despite the challenges of delivering health-care services to this population.

Programs like Boston Health Care for the Homeless, which has provided high-quality health-care services in the Greater Boston area for more than 25 years, are key to ensuring that homeless individuals, young and old alike, receive needed medical and dental care.
