Republicans, minus Perry, woo the right at forum (Reuters)

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Reuters) ? Five Republican presidential hopefuls pledged their faith in free markets and the Constitution at a campaign forum for conservatives on Monday, although the event lost some luster when Texas Governor Rick Perry was a late no-show.

The 2012 Republican White House contenders appeared separately at the South Carolina forum but shared similar views on the need to slash government, cut taxes and repeal President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul.

"The reason I see us struggling economically is that Washington has become too assertive, too big, too demanding on the lives of the American people," said former front-runner Mitt Romney, who has fallen behind Perry in opinion polls in the Republican race for the right to face Obama in 2012.

Perry, a staunch social and religious conservative, pulled out of the forum earlier on Monday to return home to Texas and supervise the fight against rampaging wildfires.

His decision put the spotlight on Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who is distrusted by some conservatives for his changing views on abortion and for backing a state healthcare law that led to the Obama plan.

Romney originally declined to appear at the forum hosted by Senator Jim DeMint, a Tea Party favorite. But as Perry moved up in the polls, Romney changed his schedule to court conservatives by appearing at the forum and at a Tea Party rally in New Hampshire on Sunday.

Romney easily fell in line with the other contenders at the forum, pledging to repeal Obama's healthcare plan, cut back on government regulations and return many federal powers to the states.

"I don't think I've seen an administration that has gone further afield from the Constitution," Romney said of Obama.

The forum was the first skirmish in a growing fight for support from the conservatives who dominate early nominating contests in states like Iowa and South Carolina.

It kicked off the busiest stretch of the 2012 Republican presidential campaign so far, with three nationally televised debates scheduled in the next three weeks.

The first will be on Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan library in California, which is now scheduled to be Perry's first appearance with his rivals on a national stage.

FOCUS ON OBAMA

In South Carolina, the candidates ignored each other to focus on Obama, who they said had dramatically expanded the reach of government. They all said they would reduce corporate taxes and free private enterprise to create more jobs.

"This economy is in grave danger of getting worse, not getting better," former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich said, warning the unemployment rate could drop further.

"Nobody should assume that 9 percent is the bottom," he said, calling Obama's job policies a "tragedy."

Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota called heavy government spending a moral issue and said the Obama healthcare plan was the first step to a nationalized health system.

"This is the foundation for socialized medicine," she said. "Make no mistake about it: it will change the face of this nation forever."

Libertarian Representative Ron Paul said the Tea Party fiscal conservatives were touting many of the proposals he had pushed for years in trying to reduce the role of the federal government.

He pledged to end U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, which he said would ease the economic burden while pumping more spending into the economy. "I would bring them all home," he said.

DeMint and the other sponsors of the event, including Representative Steve King of Iowa, said they understood Perry's need to cancel. Perry returned to Texas after a morning appearance at a Conway, South Carolina, town hall meeting with Representative Tim Scott.

Perry threw a light jab at Romney during the town hall meeting, saying his job creation record in Massachusetts paled in comparison to what Perry had achieved in Texas.

Scott, who hosted Perry at his town hall, praised Romney's performance. "The fact that he showed up said a lot," he said. "I think he did a good job."

Hope in UK: Libyan exiles expect better days (AP)

MANCHESTER, England ? Clean new clinics staffed with top doctors and nurses. A properly equipped school system with teachers who care. A political model that works, where citizens' views are represented and compromise is seen as not only possible, but honorable.

These are some of the high hopes held by Libyan exiles and their supporters in Manchester ? home of the U.K.'s largest Libyan community ? and in other English cities now that dictator Moammar Gadhafi is on the run, his power gone.

Many in Manchester's community of about 5,000 exiles have sent aid, or seen their husbands and brothers go back to join the uprising, and now some are making plans to go back and help directly in what may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reverse decades of decay in their oil-rich, underdeveloped homeland.

Dentist Monder Zbaeda wants to start a health clinic in Libya with his brother and father, both doctors. Teacher Sondes Abdul-Malek wants to raise her 8-month-old son Bilal there, if possible. British-born Lucinda Lavelle hopes to join her husband ? who is founding a new political party in Libya ? to try and shape a new Libya.

"Those of us who have been blessed by being abroad and having education and opportunities have a duty to go back and help," said Zbaeda, 28, who hopes to help influence the new government's health care policies. "We want to forget the past as best we can and concentrate on the future."

They are earnest but not naive. They know the revolution could be hijacked in myriad ways, that corruption will not simply disappear, and that there will be divisions about what sort of society to build now that Gadhafi and his family have been dislodged.

They concede, also, that some Libyans who remained inside the country may not appreciate compatriots who come back from the West with fancy degrees and advanced language skills, and try to tell them how a new society should be structured.

"There will be a bit of resentment because those from the West may have better education and be better able to liaise with foreign companies," Zbaeda said. "You might find a lost generation within Libya who never had the opportunities to go abroad and train. We have to help our brethren find opportunities."

With the capital Tripoli liberated and Gadhafi loyalists holding on to a dwindling number of cities, the Libyans in Manchester feel complete victory is near. They celebrated their country's liberation ? an event many thought would not be achieved in their lifetime ? at a party Saturday in Manchester's Whitworth Park organized by the British branch of the Libyan People's Solidarity Group.

Many who blame Gadhafi for destroying their families after he came to power 42 years ago are jubilant about his fall, but wary of what comes next. They want to make sure another self-styled strongman doesn't take his place.

"The last thing we need is another personality coming in to take over," said Lavelle, secretary of the British Libyan Solidarity Campaign.

Lavelle's husband Azeldin el Sharif is already back in Libya, where he planned to announce the formation of a political party. He had received political asylum in Britain, but will no longer seek that protective status now that it is safe for him to live in Libya, and Lavelle plans to join him.

"He wants to be involved in the political rebuilding of his country and I want to be with him," she said.

"My biggest worry for Libya is the way the regime has been run for 40-odd years, it depends on networks of family and friends and a huge amount of corruption ? it worries me that that might drip into the future," she said.

The family has already been touched by the fighting ? her brother-in-law was killed in the uprising, as was one of her husband's cousins. These losses, and thousands more, have tempered Lavelle's pleasure in Gadhafi's fall.

"You can't feel great with so many thousands of people dead and so many missing," she said. "So much tragedy, and it was unnecessary. You don't feel happy, but you feel relief that it's now nearly over."

Most Libyans in Manchester understand that difficulties lie ahead even as more and more world leaders recognize the National Transitional Council as the legitimate government of Libya.

Abdul-Malek, who wants to return with her husband and infant son to teach, said she is apprehensive now that hard decisions have to be made about what comes next.

"The times are exciting, but questions will rise now about who will hold Libya next," she said. "Everyone wants democracy, and they want someone with their head screwed on properly, and someone who won't rule for 42 years."

Her strongest feeling, however, is joy. She sees vindication for her father, who has for decades spoken out against Gadhafi's human rights abuses, leading to fears that he might face reprisals from Gadhafi's agents.

"In the mornings, when he'd drop my mum off at work he wouldn't let her go to the car, he'd switch it on and test it first so if they had done something to the car it would be just his life, not our life, that was taken," she said.

After living with fear for so many years, it is not surprising that the family has celebrated by using a well-scuffed picture of Gadhafi as a doormat.

Abdul-Malek, 29, said a stigma has been lifted for Libyans living abroad.

"For a long time, many Libyans were kind of embarrassed to be Libyan, because of living in the shadow of Gadhafi," she said. "He's a clown and people think Libyans are like him, weird and eccentric. Now patriotism is coming out. I'm proud the Libyans have made him fall and brought freedom."

GAEMS G155 Video Game Console Case Offers Gaming On The Go

ATLANTA ? Console gaming on the go just got easier thanks to a mobile gaming kit that comes with a built-in high-definition display screen to connect to your Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation system.

The GAEMS G155, short for Gaming and Entertainment Mobile Systems, is essentially a heavy-duty briefcase with the display neatly fixed to the inner lid. Your game console is positioned inside and held in place tightly by two wide fabric fasteners straps.

A short HDMI cable comes with the unit and connects your game console to a port near the bottom of the display. Two pouches are available for power cords and a controller or two.

That's pretty much the simple science behind this $299 unit. Once you've put your console in, you can play "Call of Duty: Black Ops" to your heart's content anywhere there's a power outlet.

The system supports recent models of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3. You'd have to buy those separately. (Nintendo Co.'s Wii isn't supported because it doesn't have an HDMI jack.)

The build quality of the unit is fine. The console sits on a padded base that helps prevent it from slipping around in the case. I noticed no shifting as I carried my PlayStation 3 from room to room and to the office.

The 15.5-inch LED HD display delivered crisp colors and sharp detail during my tests playing a FIFA soccer game and a few shooters titles. High-definition videos I had saved on the PS3 hard drive also looked fine.

The volume, brightness and menu buttons at the bottom of the display glow red and offer easy access and usability. That said, I think the unit would be better if it shipped with an optional wireless remote, instead of selling that piece separately for $20.

There are twin audio jacks on the bottom of the display, which is a nice touch if you're gaming against someone next to you.

What might you need the GAEMS G155 for?

If you're traveling on business and are passionate about your games, you could use it to continue your campaigns from the comfort of a hotel room in the evenings. You could also bring it home for the holidays and pull it out after you've eaten enough turkey and endured enough family banter for the evening.

The GAEMS 155 is one of those products you probably think you don't need until you see how convenient it is. For some, surely this is overkill. For avid gamers, however, this is a pretty sweet addition for the road.

Peter Sunde and Fredrik Neij, two of the original Pirate Bay founders, have launched a new file sharing site called Bayfiles, which they say will comply with international copyright laws.

Unlike the Pirate Bay, which makes shared files potentially available to everyone, the new site will provide users with specific links for their files - meaning that files are only available to people who are given the links.

Users are also warned that any copyright material will be removed from the servers immediately, and the founders have even gone as far as to register Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) officers, who will monitor any claims of copyright abuse.

In its terms and conditions, the site also states that it has 'a policy of terminating, without notice and without recourse, accounts of subscribers or account holders who are repeat infringers of copyright.'

However, some legal experts have doubts about the new system. Susan Hall, a lawyer from the legal firm Cobbetts, told the BBC that she thinks 'the people behind it are expecting that the vast majority of the material will in fact be infringing copyright.'

She added that 'I think that they are working on the principle that there will be practical difficulties in going after them for infringing copyright.'
